Tocci Selected By NED for American Twine Project

American Twine Building #2 office complex in Cambridge

Tocci teams up with New England Development and GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. for American Twine’s foundation in Cambridge.

Construction is expected to begin in October.

The scope of work for this important historic structure includes underpinning the existing Building #2 foundation walls with a helical pile and concrete knee wall system. Piles will be installed both inside and outside of the building and will connect and support existing exterior walls by way of a new concrete knee wall on either side of the existing foundation.

The 117,000 sf American Twine Building was constructed as 3 separate “buildings” over a period of time beginning in the late 1800’s through 1934. Building #2’s lowest level is an existing 6,600 sf footprint in the historic mill building housing tenants from nearby institutions of higher learning and a range of software and biomedical companies. Its central location, convenient access to the Red and Green Lines, and historic charm, make it a desirable office environment for a variety of firms. The occupied renovation will require careful logistics planning and thoughtful coordination with the building’s occupants and the neighborhood.

Tocci, known for historic preservation and adaptive reuse, is eager to undertake the foundation stabilization work on this nationally registered historic brick and beam building. Construction completion is expected in Spring of 2021.

We’re excited New England Development chose Tocci as CM for the renovation and structural improvements to the historic American Twine building in Kendall Square. New England Development is a leading owner and developer of amazing properties. We’re even more pleased to extend our services to their team of outstanding professionals using best-in-class design.
