Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) uses high-frequency radio waves and transmits them into the ground.
When the wave hits a buried or underlying object, the receiving antenna records variations in the reflected return signal. GPR’s limitations are based not on the technology but rather on the material it’s being transmitted through. For example, this technology transmitted through air or ice may result in a reading depth of 1000 meters. On the other end of the spectrum, when transmitting through concrete and asphalt, you are looking at a reading depth of 1-2 meters. This technology is often used to locate underground utilities and pipes.
The type of technology in the video below alerts the user to objects using a high-frequency pitch; the higher the pitch the closer you are to the object. One of our VDC Modelers, Ashwin, was able to capture a video of this GPR technology in use at one of our current projects in Boston, MA.
