Virtual Construction Coordinator

Tocci Building Corporation has been implementing Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) since 2006; we’ve moved past the BIM basics (clash detection, quantity extraction and logistics) and are well on our way to total transformation of the way our company executes work. We are expanding our team to support current projects, pave the way for new utilizations of BIMs (like field layout, code checking, prefabrication, and improved M/E/P/FP coordination) and define new project relationships under IPD contracts.

Job Title: Virtual Construction Coordinator

Position Description: As Tocci implements a new generation of VDC, the coordination process needs to be streamlined. Standards and protocols need to be revisited and updated. The Virtual Construction Coordinator will be responsible for that process, as well as the implementation of it on projects – basically building coordination utilizing a 3D object-oriented model. Project-specific tasks include creating models for systems trades, providing design alternatives, resolving conflicts between trades, communicating with subcontractors, and producing supplement field documents.

The position requires a self motivated, detail-oriented, open-minded and dedicated individual that has a solid knowledge of construction means & methods. Successful candidates will be prepared to emotionally engage with Tocci and its projects. The VDC Modeler is based in Woburn, MA, but travel to jobsites and partner offices for co-location throughout the country (mostly in the Northeast) is required as needed. The position reports to the Director of Virtual Design and Construction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work on teams developing & coordinating BIMs, collaborate with design professionals to co-create models and perform quality assurance/quality control checks on BIMs. Efforts will be focused on models for HVAC, plumbing, process piping, electrical service, etc.
  • Develop engineered coordination drawings and penetration plans for all mechanical trades
  • Set up and run on-site coordination meetings with subcontractors
  • Perform system design, system load calculations, ductwork and pipe sizing layout as needed
  • Develop design alternatives as needed for all trades
  • Analyze and integrate mechanical design with architectural and structural designs
  • Work closely with field and operations staff to implement mechanical model into the field
  • Train subcontractors in VDC systems, so that they can utilize digital information
  • Work with project managers, superintendents and subcontractors to update models to reflect as-built conditions
  • Understand and promote Tocci’s VDC process through internal and external training and presentations
  • Perform other tasks related to Virtual Construction implementation
  • Participate in general office “chores”, including emptying the dishwasher, moving boxes, decorating the Christmas tree or re-stocking soda in the fridge. Tocci is very much a family, so we all pitch in

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelors degree in construction related field or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 5 years mechanical coordination experience required; experience with a HVAC, Plumbing, or Electrical contractor desirable
  • Knowledge of Building Codes in New England states, BOCA, SMACNA, NFPA and trade requirements for construction
  • Prior experience in a building technology environment a plus
  • Working knowledge of and exposure to Building Information Model (BIM) systems (i.e. Autodesk AutoCAD MEP or Revit MEP, Bentley Building Mechanical or Electrical Systems, Vico Constructor, CAD-Duct or CADPIPE)
  • Excellent technical skills, including using computers, the internet and file sharing required
  • Strong personal management skills, dedication, organization and open-minded required
